Mercedes-Benz Service & Repair

Classic, Diesel or New. I Know the Quirks

Mercedes repair in Salida CO.

On these cars since 2002. W124 with the old school diesels, W202, W203, W210, W220, R230 SL, the new ones and the Sprinters. I also kept a fleet of Sprinter ambulances running.

The old ones are analog. D-Jetronic on the early ones, then K and KE-Jetronic. No real computer to ask. You measure pressures and signals, and the numbers tell you where the problem is. Same as CIS on the old Porsche.

New ones are the opposite. Everything sits in modules, and coding goes through SCN, the online coding from Mercedes. When a part does not match the factory data, SCN says no. You need dealer level software for most of it, and engineering level software for the rest. I have both, and for the online jobs behind the dealer pay wall I use paid factory access. Engine and transmission computers I can also read and clone on the bench. Keys I program too, on many models also when all keys are lost.

The 7 speed 722.9 is a good example. When the conductor plate fails, the new plate has to be programmed and coded to the car before it shifts right. I do that here, and then I drive the car until it does.

The rest is normal work. Balance shaft and idler gears on the M272 and M273, oil cooler seals on the OM642 diesel, AdBlue and NOx sensors on BlueTEC, Airmatic struts and compressors, transmission fluid on time and not for life, carbon on the direct injection engines that needs walnut blasting.

For electrical faults that set no code I use an 8 channel scope with 16 bit resolution. If nobody can find the fault in your car, that is the work I want.

CIS, Bosch K-Jetronic, is a mechanical symphony of pressures. Why most old CIS cars run below what they can, what I measure, and what altitude does to it.
Factory oil intervals of 10,000 miles keep the cost low for the car maker during warranty. I change oil every 5,000 to 7,000 miles, from what I see inside engines.
