BMW repair in Salida CO.
Twenty years on these, E36 through the current G-series, and a lot of that time on M-cars. I also did technical support for independent BMW racing teams. On a race weekend you find out fast if you are right. There is no time to try things and see.
Old ones are mechanical. E36 and E39 crack radiator end tanks and wear out water pump impellers. VANOS seals go bad. The DISA valve starts rattling. Nothing surprising there.
On the G-series the electronics are locked down. I run ISTA, and past that I have engineering level software, so I can go deeper into the car than a dealer to tweak it on very granular level. Dealers say it cannot be done. Usually they just cannot do it.
Some of it is more serious. Rod bearings on the S54 and the early S62. Subframe mounts crack on the E46 M3. The N62 and N63 V8 wear out valve stem seals and start burning oil. Check that before you buy the car.
The rest is normal work. N54 and N55 high pressure fuel pumps, timing chain guides on the N20 and N26, valve cover gaskets leaking by 80,000 miles, carbon on the direct injection engines that needs walnut blasting, the ZF eight speed and its mechatronic sleeve.
Network diagnostics, module programming and coding, VANOS and timing work, cooling system rebuilds.
If it is intermittent and nobody has found it, bring it in !.
